How Miss Universe began
The pageant began in 1952, when a California clothing company, Pacific Mills, staged the first contest in Long Beach. It has since grown into one of the most-watched pageants in the world, with delegates from more than a hundred countries and territories in recent years.
The countries with the most crowns
The United States leads with nine crowns, the most recent won by R'Bonney Gabriel in 2022. Venezuela's seven include back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009. Puerto Rico has five, a remarkable total for an island of its size, and its delegate competes at home in 2026. Mexico and the Philippines have four each, so a win for either in 2026 would take them clear of the other. India and South Africa are on three.
Mexico's Fátima Bosch arrives as the reigning queen. No country has won back-to-back since Venezuela in 2009, so María Vargas has a real piece of history to chase.
Puerto Rico as host
The 2026 final is the fourth Miss Universe held in Puerto Rico, after 1972, 2001 and 2002. Dayanara Torres, who won the crown for Puerto Rico in 1993, is also reported as a presenter this year.
